Rant - The New Web Site Style of Unending First Page

Am I old and grumpy (don't answer that) or is the new style of web design irritating as a fly that won't go away. The long opening page with big pictures, minimal information, and endless scrolling is tedium at its best. I reached my limit to day when Erik Naso mentioned he liked Movcam cages. I went to the product page. I must be as dumb as toast. I can't find any products on that page.

The page that you linked to is actually a very short page that does mention their products, but that's about it. The thing I find amusing is that they picture a RED with a Fuji 19-90 and an FS-7 with a Canon 17-120 and both set-up with external motors for focus, iris and zoom. And both of those lenses have servos for all of that in their grips, all you have to do is plug into them. If you're gonna advertise for your FIZ controls, why not show it with a lens that actually NEEDS your system? Why would I put an external motor on my 17-120, when I just plug a cable into my MicroForce and I'm good?

I hate the neverending scroll too, and I'm a web programmer. Suppose you scroll and scroll, find an interesting link, click it, then click back. Now you have to start all over again. Paginated pages for the win!

I also hate the new fashion of "sticky headers," where the top or bottom banner (or both!) never move as you scroll. Am I the only person who scrolls with the spacebar?

The web has become so bloated that I browse with JavaScript turned off. You should try it. Some pages don't work at all, and you have to turn it back on for those sites. But most things run so much quicker. Plus, there's less risk of some nefarious injection (see also The Website Obesity Crisis).
