Over the past two years or so...after years of avoiding it at all cost in its infancy...I have acquired a number of wireless technologies.
First was my XBox 360's wireless controller. It worked great...until the batteries died after two months or so of use. Lame.
My new (at the time) computer came with a wireless mouse and keyboard. I really wasn't down with the idea but figured "what the hell?" Needless to say the mouse constantly has to have its batteries replaced (I use regular AA akalines because they say don't use NiMH because of quick-drain) every month or so.
Then I bought what was reviewed as one of the best wireless routers out there. The golden rule I know is if you buy wireless cheap...you pay for it in the end. The thing worked great as a 4 port switch router...but the wireless...lame. What a crapshoot to setup and I am "good" at setting up computer devices. Who isn't around this forum, right? Changing channels...setting up passwords, I did it all to get the damn thing working properly. In the end I really think it's because my stuff is near walls (I have to keep this stuff out of the way, no way it can sit in the middle of the floor) but that's just lame. Really...walls? Argh...
Then I got an Xbox wireless network adaptor. It worked...and then it didn't work. And then it worked. I would move my router around and play with the attenaes and I'd eventually get it working. On and off the router went. "Unplug/reset it to get it working" they'd say on the support forums. Reminds me of the steps it takes to fix old Windows computers. Having to reset hardware to fix it is just idiotic and is a crutch. Ugh...
My next purchase was the Sennheiser G2 wireless audio system. Works good but the sound of wired audio beats it hands down. Again...not bad and most people wouldn't notice but it's ridiculous that you have to spend thousands to get the sound a $10 XLR cable would give you. Anytime I see someone using wireless audio during a sit-down interview (and not for aesthetics reasons) I just have to laugh. Oh well...
Back to the XBox wireless adaptor and router. So I finally move the son of a b**h into the same room as the router. For convenience (not tripping over cables) I figured I'd keep using the wireless adaptor and it would a helluva lot better than when it was in the basement. WRONG! Same red/green flashing and instability. So I configured MAC addresses and whatnot and it seemed to fix it.
Then today the SOB isn't working AGAIN. So I said f*ck it and am running a good old RJ-45 to the router. Problem solved. So much for wireless anything, I say! Go green (save on batteries) and have more stability with wired gear! I see that as the next marketing ploy...
