Ramp Slow-Mo

Anyone know how to do ramp slow-mo??? From what i hear you can do it only on after effects...

I think Final Cut Pro allows for the speed to be a keyframe-able attribute. But, yes with AE you can alter the profile of speed changes to do 'ramping'.

I have Final Cut Express, and all I can do is change the speed of a clip. So what I do to 'ramp' is step wise change a series of small clips, each one is at a fixed speed up or down, and so over the course of say 2-3 second's worth of run time, I have 2 or three speed changes, and when all is said and done, looks close enough to a 'ramp' to be ok... except with major afficienados...

you are able to do this in Final Cut, but it's easier and the results are much nicer in After Effects.

Check out videocopilot.com. There's a pretty good tutorial in the tutorial section on how to do this.

doing this from memory without after effect infront of me but...

start a new composition, throw your clip in
right click it and goto time > time remapping

go to the bottem right of the bottem left window a little graph button to bring up the graph

and if the graph looks like / then you will have to change a setting of the graph... should be the very left button under the graph and the setting there needs to be changed until the graph is flat

or if your graph is _ flat your good to go

keyframe where you want it to start, and then where you want it to finish

drag the second keyframe farther and it will make a |_| then grab each bottem corner and bring them up to where the keyframe squares are and it will create a half circle

the lower the circle goes the slower it will ramp

sorry i dont know the exact button names and stuff for the graph but this should get you going, or just youtube search ramp slow mo after effects

Premiere pro CS3 supports time remapping as well, although it's video only (you can't ramp the audio)

After Effects would be my pick to be honest - using the graph as well as setting the frame blending to "pixel motion" can give some very nice results :)

i have a major problem with this, and maybe it's just me but let's say for example that the video file is 20 seconds long.

You slow it down 200%, making it half speed, but then you still only have 20 seconds of video... It doesn't elongate it to 40 which means you lose half of your shot.

How can you work around this? In either pp or AE

Hey Papa here is your fix. Make your comp with your footage like normal. Then enable time remapping. Then go to composition settings and double its length. For example say your clips is 20 seconds long make the comp 40 seconds long.

Then drag your 2nd time remapping keyframe(last keyframe) all way to the 40 second mark. Turn on frame blending and toggle to pixel motion. That should do it :)
