As you may or may not know, the muslim fasting holy month of Ramadan has started, and as is customary I am wishing Ramadan Mobarack to all fellow DVXusers who may be undertaking fasting this holy month!

and in the spirit of well wishing may I also extend the same well wishes to non-fasting members too!

Thanks Horse, I'll keep on rolling..

Ramadan this year is a little tougher than last year as the hours are longer this time, next year will be even harder...

I wish to all a month full of share because it's also the month of Zakat and the month of Forgiveness.

Have a blessed ramadan

The ZAKAT is a form of giving to those who are less fortunate. It is obligatory upon all Muslims to give 2.5 % of wealth and assets each year (in excess of what is required) to the poor.

Happened to be visiting Marrakesh during Ramadan, many years ago.

Things were quiet by day, but come sundown - hoo-BOY! Party time!*

Coincidentally Easter fell close by that year, and I was in Rome from the Thursday before Good Friday. I must admit that while the days were similarly quiet, the evenings were not nearly so much fun.

* non-alcoholic party time, of course

How does the fasting work? Do you eat nothing during certain hours, or nothing at all for the month? Can you drink water only, or no drinking during certain hours either?

no water, smoking, food, gum between sunup and sundown, for the month. at night, you can eat and drink.

Pretty much as TimurCivan has explained, also along with the physical restrictions are the mental restrictions, e.g getting angry or swearing would also break the fast.

In essence its a continuation of the same teachings as was followed by Judaism (Yom Kippur) and Christianity as explained in the following translation of the Quran:

O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint. [Surah Bakarah - 2:183]

On a related note the English word 'Breakfast' is derived from the act of fasting, i.e you 'Break' your 'fast' in the morning.

Hope that helps.

really tough in the summer. The heat, no water, and long days make it hard..... though the saudi arabians, qataris, omaninas, palestinians, egyptians etc... do it like that every year..... except they are in the desert and its burning...

Well, it's in large part about cultivating discipline. Cushy surroundings aren't entirely conducive, to that.
