RAM Upgrade Question

I am upgrading my 2008 3.1 Mac Pro from 8GB RAM to either 16GB or 20GB.
My question: Do all the slots need to have equal size cards or can I mix and match? Do I buy 8 2GB cards or 4 4GB cards. The latter would combine with the 4 remaining 1GB cards, giving me 20GB RAM.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Andrew

My 2006 Mac Pro you have to sets of Ram boards. I think you can have different ram on each of the boards, but you should verify. I would recommend checking out Other World computing to verify what you can use. On there site you can just put the Mac's model number in and it will let you know. I bought some cheap ram off AMazon and had to return it because my macbook wouldn't boot. Then i bought from OWC and haven't had any issues. Kingston is also a good brand and I think has a similar feature of putting the model number in.
