RAM Question reguarding HD editing

I am considering upgrading to the new dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5 from my iMac. The main reason is because I plan to edit in HD. My question about HD editing with Final Cut Pro 5 is, how much RAM will I need to edit HD footage from, oh say the Panasonic VariCam? Will 1 GB be good?
