RAM for Vegas

It's my understanding that Vegas never uses more than 3.5 gigs of RAM. If that's true, does this mean 4 gigs of RAM will cover you?

I mean I realize 3.5 is LESS THAN 4, but in terms of the overall amount of RAM installed on the machine. That's what I mean.

I'd also like to know whether this changes under Windows 7 - I too will soon be shopping for a new computer...

I've never seen Vegas use more than 2 gigs of memory (and I have 3.5 gigs on 32-bit Windows). I always have plenty of left-over RAM no matter the size or complexity of the project being rendered.

Okay lets say Vegas uses 5 GIG max of RAM, worst case scenario. You still need RAM to run the graphics card? Other processes? So how much more on top of the 5 GIG do you need for the rest of the PC?

RAM is cheap.

I dunno about that... once you start talking 4 GB sticks which have to come in sets of 3 you are talking pretty serious $$$.

I just got quoted $900 for 12GB as three 4GB sticks.
If your Motherboard has 6 memory slots its far cheaper getting six 2GB sticks, but not all motherboards have that many slots.

This...

is the reason for this...

Why?

After Effects easily swaps several gigs of RAM on the same system. Vegas never swaps, despite very large HD edits.

Does Vegas deliberately avoid using swap? Does it use only a percentage (40%) of available RAM?

I'll be installing Windows 7 64-bit in a few days on the same system, so the comparison will be interesting!
