rainmaker

An upcoming shoot calls for raindrops falling onto an umbrella, starting slowly and increasing to a steady rain. I'm looking for a reasonably simple and cost effective solution to get this done, no budget available for an fx crew.

I know of various methods, all depending on cost and I'd rather not just make a random list.

Relatively free method: two hoses, one from the location shooting (if house) and the other dragged over from the house next door. Trigger valves on each. Person on each hose on either side of the camera and shooting the water at a setting past spray, but not quite stream and shoot them at a high angle so the water falls crossing in front of the camera.

Thanks for your replies. I guess if I find a method that works well and can be used on future shoots I don't mind spending a few bucks myself. If it's just a couple of garden hoses or if it's something more elaborate, I'm open to suggestions.

Or you could just shoot one speed of rain from one hose in 60p and then ramp part of the clip in post to like 200%, and then when the next shot switches it's shot at regular speed.
