Raincover for DVX100

Re: Raincover for DVX100

I have used a shower cap, and I also have a little camera pad that looks like a towel on one side and a nylon raincoat square on the other that lays overtop.

Portabrace actually makes one though, but I think it's $200.

You crack me up Jarred... (though it sounds like something I'd do ::))

Re: Raincover for DVX100

lol.. gotta make due with what you have. The camera pad also works great to protect from the hot sun.. I have also seen people use those reflective car covers for the same thing.

Re: Raincover for DVX100

By the way, do you shoot snowboarding or skiing? Where do you shoot? I shoot snowboarding and I live in Eastern Washington...

Re: Raincover for DVX100

I'm starting to get geared up to shoot snowboarding and skiing at Big White and Silver Star in BC. Ordering the camera next week, and buying all the gear for winter. Matteblox and lots of batteries.

Snow is falling in the mountains.

Re: Raincover for DVX100

beep me when you go I will be your B cam.

Re: Raincover for DVX100

Dont think I got that one.. Are you thiking of snowbaording with the glidecam.. yikes ::)

Re: Raincover for DVX100

No I'm not quite that crazy....was wondering what sort of rate you charge for the glidecam , DVX and services.

Also were you going to VFS, I remember seeing someone posted along time ago with questions about it. If you want to you can contact me off the list.

Re: Raincover for DVX100

No VFS for me.. they invited me to speak once and it became a circus.. Would never recommend that school to anyone.

As for rates, what did you need?

Re: Raincover for DVX100

Well I pretty well have the same setup glidecam V-8 and soon to have a DVX, I'm ordering camera next week from your sponsor.

Looking at building a crane to do shots, that are a new take on the sport.

Re: Raincover for DVX100

I have the portabrace rain slick and it is very nice. Petrol also make one but i looked at both and although the Portabrace is almost twice the price it is a much nicer fit to the camera and is of better quality. if you put the removable lense shade on you do have to watch out for it sneaking into wide shots. the dvx has a very wide lens :). if your planing on using it in the snow you'd probably pay to have something even more weather proof. perhaps an under water bag, theres a german brand that make them, can't think off the top of my head but i can find out.

Re: Raincover for DVX100

Tawsy-

the German brand you were looking for is probably EWA Marine.

I recently purchased the Portabrace Rainslicker for the DVX, but so far I am not very impressed. Apart from being black in color (I thought they had their trademark blue color for all products) it does not offer any protection for an external shotgun mike. On top of that, you almost would have to remove the mike mount to ensure proper sealing.

The fit is so so, but I think they have a serious design flaw.
When you extend the compartment for the LCD and then open the flap that lets you access the controls (i.e. USER buttons, Gain and so on) you better pay very close attention when you close the flap again. It has the tendency to not overlap much with the adjacent LCD compartment, and one negligent moment will expose the ND-Filter switch to the rain...not a good idea.

Tawny, did you observe this as well? I am considering sending it back. By the way, the new DVX-100A brochure lists the Petrol Bags Rain cover as OEM accessory. It looks interesting (vinyl cover over the controls, cover/boot for external mike)...

Petrol website has it listed, but no detail pictures there either.

I believe it is priced at 129 USD...

Re: Raincover for DVX100

I hadn't noticed the design flaw you mentioned i will have to have a look latter on. I must admit I was a little disappointed by the apparant lack of thought in the external mic part but appart from that I find it pretty good. I found the fit to be much better than the Petrol bags. My one is the trademark blue I didn't know there was an option to get them in black? The truth of the matter is a plastic bag probably works almost as well it just limits you a bit in what functions you can use, and it doesn't look as good! ;)
