Rain cover or glove?

What are you guys using to protect your HVX from rain/dust/sand/etc?

Are people happy with the Kata DVG-51? I can't get a sense from those tiny pictures if it blocks the buttons too much. How is it in the rain?

A few people said the Kata rain jacket is clumsy... what do you all suggest?

Kata DVG-51 is not really designed for rain. The first production run was not cut precisely and does not allow opening the firewire an back right ports while using. Otherwise, provides excellent cushioning to camera and good dust protection. It is much more for shock protection and dust than it is for rain.

How is access to the lens and focus rings? It looks like there is a velcro door or something that you open to access those? I typically use my left hand resting under the camera with my thumb going part way up the left side and my middle finger going to part way up the right side to pull focus on run and gun stuff. I'm concerned that there's just a little door for focus and I cant use two fingers on it.

Once again, the pictures are so damn small that I can't really tell.

How about focus assist, nds, iris, wb, etc?

Any chance you could post some shots of your unit, or have you not got your fixed one yet?

They gave you a rain jacket to tide you over, right? How is that?

Thanks for your insight!

Don't have a fixed one yet.

The rain jacket they sent would be nice if I had a Z1 because that's what they sent by accident.

Well, this is my first post. I just got my camera yesterday. I ordered the Petrol Raincover #peprcpn from B&H. Since I live in FL and we have a rainy season most summers and I'm sure I'll want to take me Hvx200 to the beach I wanted to be safe.
I haven't put it on yet to see since i have spent the last couple days trying to figure out this camera But I'll let you know when I get a chance

My Thoughts on the Petrol Raincover #peprcpn

Side Panels, Both sides have plastic on the sides

LCD Side: has dog ear flap so that you can extend the LAD, It velcros at the bottom making it easier to operate switches

Tape Side: Top zippered plastic panel. Only thought on this is that if you are out in the rain and have to change a tape, since it is top zipper and not along the bottom, rain could get in.

On top there in a pocket, I assume this could be used to use the top controls, but also help in gripping the handle.

On the tape side there is a extension that can roll out, I guess this could be used to run out cables or Mics. Right below that there is a protrusion in the cover that looks like it is for being able to have XLR's connected. this part has no opening.

There is a protrusion in the back with an elastic opening for the eye piece.

The Bottom. Zippered with 4 zippers. Seems nice being able to have a opening to mount. then also being able to open other section say for changing a battery or running out cables.

Lens Opening: About 8" hole with velcro on interior and exterior. also comes with an flimsy plastics flag that can be velcroed to the opening.

My thoughts. The opening is not exactly what I would of liked. But for the price, I paid $89.95, I think this will work for me in light rain.

Manual Focus/zoom. You can manuplate it from the exterior of the bag, but I would not use that during the shot, maybe to set up the shot. There really isn't a good way to manually control the Zoom/focus that I can see besides using the remote. Unless you want to expose the lens to rain

I would of like to of found a cover that say used a glass filter to protect the front of the lens in the rain, because rain does not always fall straight down, But for the money I paid this cover suites my needs for now.

I definately need a DVG-51 glove for my camera. (High wind environment, and possible bumps...) Are the corrected gloves being shipped yet? (I have been reading about the mis-cut ones...) I'd also like to see a picture or two if anyone is willing... THANKS!!!

Hmmm.... nope. Don't think so...

That looks great.

Bodyflight, they have not shipped out the corrected Kata gloves yet. I'm still waiting for mine.

cbln... Thanks! I really need one of these, and the Kata web site shows that the DVG-51 "Item is not available". Don't know if this means they are totally going away... or if they are waiting to 'get it right' before they re-introduce them. I have sent them an e-mail asking the question.

Great, let us know what they say. I hope they do reintroduce them because it's a good way to have some padding on the HVX.

Well, they are still re-working the design. The e-mail response stated that they "ASSUME it will be relaunched in a few months" [emphasis added] They basically asked me to stay in touch for updates.

I'm really bummed... I need a cover like this because I will be exposing the camera directly to 120(+) MPH wind. There are people flying around who could easily kick the camera if I'm not quick enough to get out of the way. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can protect the camera? How bad is the original DVG-51? Will it render the camera almost unuseable, or is it more of a convenience issue? If I recall correctly, the firewire port is covered... is anything else covered up?

Will the original DVG-51 mis-cut camera gloves still portect the camera adequately? Will the camera be useable with this mis-cut cover in place?

Thanks!!
