Raid

I have 2 250GB hard drives RAIDED (striped) for a 500GB drive total. My computer died, and I'm pretty sure it's not the hard drives. I'vebeen meaning to upgrade for a while and I wanted to know... if I switch those harddrives over to a new computer, and RAID them on the new computer, can I save the information that was already stored on them? I'm working on a feature film and a short film and that would just suck if I had to recapture about 20+ tapes worth of footage and re-edit everything... Anyone have any suggestions?
Had:
Athlon XP 2800+
Switching to:
Athlon 64 X2 4200+

I can give other specs if needed.
Thanks!

If the old raidset is based on a controller built in the motherboard, you'll need a new motherboard (or possibly an add on card) that has the same raid chipset in order to make the disk available on your new PC. Instead, if the hard drives are connected to an addon raid card, just install the appropriate sfw driver on the new PC then move the card and the HD. In both cases, I assume the boot disk (C:) WAS NOT on the raidset, otherwise it may gets a little bit more tricky. Cheers.

Yeah it was based on a controllerbuilt into the motherboard. The old motherboard I have is an Abit AN-7 and Abit AN-8 Ultra. Frizzle Fry, when I hit the power button, the computer tries to start up but then shuts off immediately. I switched power supplies and it turned on and I was able to get in and look at the drives and the data was still there but then the computer made this beeping noise (like it did before when it got too hot) and it shut off. Now, when i try to restart it, it wont get past the Windows logo. I'm thinking it might be the power supply cuz the old one that "died" was a 450watt i think... and the one I just plugged in is a 300watt. Not sure though. ... This sucks.... haha...

How do I find out if it has the same RAID chipset. I'm looking at the Abit website now but I can't find info on it.
Thanks

are all your fans working? particularly the CPU fan? any other hardware changes prior to your problem or did you make changes to the BIOS? 300W PS may not be enough to power all your hardware.

Abit AN-7 or AN-8 Ultra? One or the other...

Yes all the fans are working.... and no, I meant I have the AN-7 and I want to get the AN-8 Ultra if I upgrade.
I figured out the problem. The 450 watt power supply died. The computer kept shutting off after I put in the 300 because last night I took the CPU out to see if it was burned. It wasnt, so I cleaned off the old thermal compound and put some new thermal compound on. I guess the layer was too thin cuz I went into the computer diagnostics and checked the temperature. It was about 80C or so, so that's why it kept shutting off. I put more thermal compound on and it went down to 32C or so. So everything seems to be working fine now. I may just go out and buy a 500watt power supply to replace the 300 watt one. My computer constantly overheats and shuts off when I render and it's a Barton 2800+ so I still may upgrade anyways. With this scare though, I'm seriously thinking about investing in some hard drives to back up my work. Losing all that work would have been horrible.
Thanks for the help though, I really do appreciate it!

phew! dodged a bullet on that one, eh? glad you didn't lose any data. if you upgrade, i recommend getting an ASUS mobo.

Yeah really. I should seriously get some hard drives to back up my stuff. Not really sure if I should RAID 1 my RAID 0 or if i should just throw all my video clips only onto some hard drives... but anyways, thanks for the help. Why do you recommend ASUS over ABIT?
Thanks,
Paul

ASUS is well-recognized for high quality boards for many years now. They were also an AMD-64 release partner.

You could configure a RAID3 which is a good mix of security and performance. You can get external firewire RAID boxes, too. Just depends on how important it is for you to keep all your captured tape on a drive. Or can you live with using your miniDV tapes as the archive? That way you can backup your rendered files to DVD.

But yeah, hard drives would also work.

If I want to do a raid 1 on an existing raid 0, would that be possible? What about RAIDing SATA and IDE?
thanks,
Paul DV

To RAID 1 (mirror) an existing RAID 0 (stripe) of 2 drives, you would need an additional 2 drives setup in RAID 0 configuration, then combine the two stripes into a mirror. Or you could bust up the stripe of two drives (losing all the data) and create a new mirror.

Yeah i wanted to do it without wiping out the existing raid 0. that's good to hear that i can stripe 2 new drives and mirror the existing ones. that's exactly what i wanted to do - without losing the data.... I'll look into it more. Just wondering if it was possible or if i would have to start clean.
thanks!
