Raid Storage Options

Hey -

I am trying to build a storage system and need some advice.
I am working on a mac and need at least 5TB - and I would imagine double that for mirroring. Here are some of my questions below

1. In Mac OSX is it possible to setup RAID5 - Parity?
2. If Raid5 not possible is Raid1 - Mirroring - fast enough to edit 1080i clips from?
3. Does anyone recommend an SATA enclosure box and sata PCI-X card?

FYI - Right now I have a Norco DS-1220 12bay enclosure with 10-500GB Sata drives in bays 1-10. I am having some problems with it which have to do with mac 10.4.x not being compatible with the SATARaid software the Silicon Image 3124 sata card uses. So I am only able to use Raid1 from Disk Utility. My mirrored raids are very slow and I keep having problems with them - constantly rebuilding.

What are others using for storage methods? I am not looking to daisy chain a bunch of G-Techs or other FW drives. Too messy a setup i'm afraid. I am looking for something under $1 per GB - preferably around $.50-$.60 per GB. Suggestions?

thanks--
anthony

Buy some G-raid2 external drives from G-technology. They are able to handle 3 streams HD simultaneously and are designed to work with the Mac !!!

I've written tons on this over at HD for Indies.

3ware also has a new (G5 onlly not Mac Pro) fault tolerant RAID, Disk Utility can do RAID 10, SoftRAID is much better than Disk Utility for RAID 1.

You should take a look at 2 Sonnet Fusion 500P's along with their X4P (if your G5 has pci-x). I've got two enclosures with 10 Seagate 7200.10 320GB drives striped raid 0 . The raid can do 10bit uncompressed 1080i and never drops frames. Fast! I have a second raid set that I clone the media to as back-up. Works great!
