RAID Storage configuration help

Hello,

I just hooked up the Pegasus R6 thunderbolt Raid to my Mac. It defaults to a RAID5. Does anyone have any advice / input on this being the best option for backup? Am I safer with a RAID 1 that's fully mirrored? At the end of the day, I want a full backup and I'm not confident that RAID5 does it. Seems that a 5 distributes the data over all drives, but nothing is backed up.

Thanks!
SB

Raid 5 is as safe as Raid 1, you can lose one drive and still have your data recovered. One of the advantages of raid 5 is that you get a little more usable space from the drives. With raid 1 you get about 1/2 of the storage usable that is if you have 2 500gb drives you get about 500gb. With raid 5, if you use 3 500gb drives you will get more than half the storage to be usable maybe 1tb or a little more.

You can configure raid 1 with only two hard drives, raid 5 requires 3 or more. raid 1 is easier to implement, so many inexpensive raid controllers can do raid 1 but not raid 5. if you already have a raid 5 supported and set up, I would leave it at that.
