Which RAID solution would you buy for working with DVCPRO-HD material from the HVX200 from these options:

1. G-Technology G-RAID Pro 2.5TB ($3,798.50)
2. LaCie S2S 2.5 TB SATA II ($3,395.95)
3. Huge Systems 1.2TB 4GB Fiber Channel ($4,185)
4. Apple xServer 3.5TB 2GB Fiber Channel ($11,000)

Also what RAID level do you feel is best for video. If we record to P2 cards we should have some form of parity or mirroring on the the drive for some flavor of backup. What do you use for the best price/performance ratio?

Good question. I've just bought a Quad G5-w-5 gigs of ram and I am looking for a raid solution as well. It seems that the G-Raids have received good reviews. The 1TB G-Raid has just had a price reduction, (a little over $1,000.00 street price). No protection whatsoever, (raid 0), but a lot of people say ".... they take a 'lickin and keep on 'tickin ...." Ultimately, fibre is the way to go .... if you can afford it!

Well I was leaning toward the LaCie but it does not currently do RAID 5 although the rep told me it would with a firmware update in the next few weeks or so. The G-RAID Pro looks cool and it is RAID 3 or 0 I believe but it will not be out till March.

The Huge Systems is more expensive for less space but is fiber so the configuration of that system can sustain high data rates. I guess it really depends on the number of streams one wants to use at the same time and what data rate your video is at based on the format it is in.

The Xraid is a bit expensive and I can not justify it considering some of the other stuff I want to buy. So if I go fiber it will be Huge and a review from Creative Cow gave it five stars for the rack mount version.

Might as well spend the extra 2k and buy it once. With 1.2TB in a RAID 5 I should get about 800MB or so with the other data being parity, I think this is important with a P2 workflow incase something happens. I also plan to back up to tape - I currently have a Sony AIT drive. Not the best but it does work and I can put 130GB on one tape.

So the Huge with the ATTO single or dual channel fiber system or the one of the others? Not sure but I am sure I will figure it out.

OWC YO!!! Other World Computing, I forget the site but they have some great looking durable drives for less than G-Raid's cost.. That's the route I'm going,

they sell a 500 GB raid enclosure for $370.00 around.. 2X250 GB drives

The G-Raid is a great little drive I have a 500gb rock solid. Its good for portability too for taking out to location shoots. Or at least it was until Apple decided to get rid of firewire800 ports. But im building a burley box with 4 500gb raid 0 for 2 terabytes, oh moma uncompressed here I come.

Where on the web can I find a good primer explaining how Raid's work?
I don't know what Raid 0 or 1 or 2 means or what mirrors are etc.
I guess I'm going to have to learn though.

Best value is the 500gb.. Just get two of those instead of the 1TB. Costs $740 for both if I remember correctly... You can daisychain them if you want. No RAID 5 though.

even better get another firewire 800 card and put each drive on its own bus and then raid them. You'll get almost twice the performance.

Yeah.. That's true. Or you could switch drives if you only need one at a time. I was just telling people what options they had for the more budget minded among us. Daisy chaining isn't ideal or preferable but it is an option if you just have to have it for what ever reason.

totally agree. the 800 card could be an upgrade down the line when you need the performance. I bet the 800 card and the individual drives would still be cheaper than the 1tb too.

Hell, even if you don't have firewire you can get a two port card and two drives for less than the TB drive.
