sure...sata... what about on laptops.....any products that give you screaming raid hooked up to a laptop?

anyone try this?

CardBus Serial ATA adapter
It instantly adds two high speed Serial ATA ports to any Notebook computer via the CardBus/PCMCIA slot. You can have one of the fastest external hard drives in the market, 3 times the data transfer rate of the USB 2.0

for that matter...whats the best price perfomance external raid?

i wish there was something in between Raid 0 and Raid 3...I'd like to be able to have a box that can hold several and be confiured to use more than one port....i think this does but not sure...

Raid 0 with 7200rpm is OK for 100mbps work, as long as you have a backup copy of your files of caurse.

Sata on a laptop: Here's my setup

Nice thing about this is the port options on this G-drive. I can stream to the drive using the eSata card or I can offload the P2 cards using the FW800 bus. They key is to use the laptop FW bus to connect the HVX and a separate cardbus to stream to the Hard drive. This model G-raid has a heatsink so in theory it's quiet. I think its pretty quiet.

I haven't done what I consider an exhaustive test, but it seems to work pretty smoothly with the tests I've done. There are others using FW800 cards and saying good things about it, I'm betting the faster eSata transfer speed will not disappoint. I'm doing interviews in few weeks and will see how it performs at that time.

If I win the lottery one of the first things I'm getting is an Apple X-Raid. :D
Take a look at Huge systems 4210 raid. Cheaper than an xserve, 4Gbs fibre will handle uncompressed HD. I've had mine for almost a year and I've really worked it hard. They're a small company and the support is really remarkable. I had a firmware issue that caused a drive to go offline. I kept working in Raid 0 (I backed up!) for about 4 days, they got me a firmware update in that short timeframe and the rebuild went very smoothly. I've used an xserve, and I like them, but for my application I get more from the 4210. More space, more speed and more service.

On another note..ALWAYS upgrade the firmware on an ATTO card. Don't even try to make it work without checking into theiir updates which can be easily accessed on their website.
