Raid Enclosures

One thing I'm finding quickly with my HVX is that I've been going through hard drive space like crazy and I'm a bit paranoid about drive failure. I've had it happen to me before and I'm sure it will happen again. That's why I've been looking at products like the G-Raid Pro where you have multiple drives in Raid 3, 5, or 6 and get the benefit of faster R/W times along with redundancy. While I like the G-Raid Pro, I'm tempted by other products that ship without drives and also that have eSata connections which should be much quicker than FW800. So far, these are a couple of the best alternatives I've found and I'm wondering if anyone has experience they can share.

This one's from Firewire Depot--

And here's one from WiebeTech--

I appreciate the input!!!

This is what has been suggested to me:
Highpoint's Rocket Raid 2322, which is the only card that can do RAID 5 on a PCIe mac. The box we're looking at is the 8 drive SC-SAT84X from PC-Pitstop. It has 2 infiniband connectors for the Rocket Raid, & it has 3 case fans & a fan on every drive tray.

Haven't ordered yet, but look good for the price. Though the 4 bay might also be good for on set - downloading through laptop and using a sata cardbus adapter (haven't found one yet).

Cheers,
Dale

Those SATA enclosures look very reasonable. Please let us know how well they work.

Do you guys put all your video data on the RAID drives or do you use the internal drives, too? Also, how do you archive the data?

planetearth,

Looks like that might be a good setup. I need to be able to take everything on a plane, so I'm looking for a solution with the raid controller in the encloser. Then I can run FW 800 or SATA to the Macbook Pro. There are lots of express card and cardbus SATA connectors out there if you look around.

Buy them without hard drives

Buy them without hard drives

Don't buy stock setups for any RAID enclosures. Depending on what you are getting you can save hundreds to thousands of dollars by buying the enclosure and drives separate.

For example:

Stock Wiebetech 5x750GB = $5025

Empty Wiebetch 5x0GB = $1700 + 5 x $350 (from zipzoomfly.com) = $3450

Buy your own hard drives... save about $1575. And if you are willing to wait a week or so, the 750's often drop to around $300. And while I used the 750's for an example, it is the same case for the other capacities. Plus, you buy them yourself and you can get Seagates with a 5-year warranty. So if something were to happen, you get them replaced at no charge.

Yeah, I just have to do my research - some of the cards I've come accross state "not for Raid", and want to make sure I can run Raid 5 of both my laptop and tower.
