Radio mic recommendation

I was wondering, I was looking for a more discrete way to record audio of my actors, to give them a little more room to move etc than my er mic and boom pole hoisted towards them.

I will be shooting on the hvx a theatrical style of film where I want the actors to be able to move a bit on set and location where i hope to get their dialogue clearly.

So any recommendations there! I'd be looking for a pair of mics :)

I might be able to save you some money. Most here will probably recommend Sennheiser
G2 wireless as being the most for the least. I have some Audio Technica wireless that are very similar that I recently shot a film with. Rather than the type normally used for video, with a reciever that mounts to the camera, these are the PA system type, so they require 110V power. I mounted three of them in a road case, so when ready to record sound, I just sit the road case next the the camera, plug in the two XLR plugs and go.
They are ATW series 3000 units with Countryman E6 mics (designed to be earworn, but I used them as lavs). The Countryman is so small you can poke it through a buttonhole, and flesh colored, so almost invisible. I want to keep one unit, but will sell two and the roadcase. If you are interested, I will post footage of them in action from the film.

Of course, since they plug in , they are not good for run and gun. But if doing most of your shooting from a tripod with power available, they are great. I have never had a dropout or interference. I will sell for about 40% OFF B & H price.

Yes. I recommend you abandon this idea and hire a professional boom operator who can track the actors properly. :cheesy:

Lavs are awful. Wireless lavs are worse. Use 'em only as a last resort, or if there is simply no other way to get the shot.

I don't think I understand your reasons for not wanting to boom. Are you not blocking your scenes? Is the script going to be improve? Even so a boom is going to work 100% better then w/l. Wireless make a good backup but are a huge mistake to make your primary sound source.

If you insist on using w/l, a search will find you the answer to the most common asked question in the forums.

Cheers

Ah well guys cheers for the advice, yep it would be improvisational (to an extent) but i guess if you want good audio you gotta work for it lol - not magic easy solution for nice dialogue audio with the radio mics!

I know it might seem obvious - guess i was just trying my luck asking haha

if they are actors let them suffer from the boom :-)
thats what the actors stand for , pretend that boom is not exist .
noneed for wierless if you dont need it

I don't necessarily agree that wireless lavs will sound terrible. In my opinion it would be more accurate to say that their application and use are more problematic, meaning that chances are increased that they would not work properly. IF you can find a good hiding spot on the talent where there is little or no cloth rubbing, and if that spot is well positioned (not necky, etc.), and if you use good mics, and if there are no interference problems then they can sound quite acceptable or better. It's all of those IF's that are the problem and to overcome them a sound guy has multiple options available.
