Racing Event Tips

I've been asked to film an event next weekend where high schools across the state build motorised go karts and the winner is the car that goes that does the most laps on the least fuel in 24hrs.

Problem is the cars go rather slow (50ks max!) so on video it won't look that fast.

Any tips on making cars look faster and getting good racing footage would be appreciated.

e.g. is progressive or interlaced the way to go?

Thanks guys!

P.S. I moved this post to this forum because I was informed it was in the wrong forum!

I don't know what you are shooting on but you can under crank your footage. This will make it look as if the go carts are ripping around like dune buggys in hell.

It might help to get more telephoto shots, and move with the vehicles themselves - with the environment blurring around them..

yes, I like monte's tech. A nice adapter will blur the background, framing the driver and only a partial car at a time. Follow the drivers face and maybe a front wheel spinning, lots of audio... Vroom Vroom. Should look cool!

Thanks guys. How do you undercrank a DVX though?

Would you shoot on a slow shutter like 1/12? and speed up in post?

Good advice!

Yeah, you could shoot with that slow a shutter if you wanted. On a DVX you'll just have to simulate undercranking in post.... oh wait, I think if you shot 24p and removed pulldown, then put in on a 30p timeline, you'd get the effect you want.

Hi guys

I just got back from my 4 trip and the advice from you guys was great. I've used a bit of slower shutter on some of the shots and some nice tight close ups which were a pain to focus as you have to rack the focus quicker then you expect but it did mean nice blured backgrounds.

Overall it went really well, I got lots of official people in 30 sec interviews as well as some of the sponsors.

The only bad bits were it was over 30 celcius at day (and hotter in my tent) and really cold at night with strong winds. There was two raceways about 15mins away from each other which meant I had to keep carting heavy camera gear around all day and on one occasion had a 25 min walk each way for a 30 sec shot of the sponsors!

Adding the fact I got sunburnt meant the camera strap kept rubbing on my shoulder (ouch) but it was worth it with the nice shots I achieved.

When its edited and aproved by the client (could be weeks) it will be put on youtube, so your oppinions on it would be appreciated!

Thanks for all your advice.
