Quicktime Settings for Render - Vegas 7

Hi all, I'm looking for a little guidance about how to render a high quality Quicktime from Vegas (version 7 in my case), without having the absolutely enormous filesizes the Default Template puts out.

I have read Eugenia's MP4 for Vimeo tutorial, and it works great. But what I haven't found are instructions on the most efficient way to deliver SD footage with a minimal quality loss.

Facts about my project:
1. I have 10 minutes of cut video on the timeline.
2. Shot Canon 24F, 16x9 DV.
3. Vegas Timeline is set to 23.97 (ITVS).
4. Vegas Project is set to DV Widescreen, Progressive, 23.97 fps.

I rendered the above project to a Quicktime with the following settings, and got a file around 600 MB:
1. Sorenson Video 3 codec
1. 1000 Kb Datarate
2. 1.212 PAR. (So the video is now stretched on my computer...)
3. 50% Quality
4. Uncompressed Audio

Can someone please tell me:

1. Is the above method maximizing the quality for that filesize?
2. Should I consider rendering to another filetype besides Quicktime?

Answer to question 1: Not by a long shot

Answer to question 2: Very dependent on what you plan to DO with the resultant file. The delivery method has evertything to do with with your question. Are you going to DVD? The internet? Putting it on a thumbdrive? That will dictate both the codec to use, the container (Quicktime is usually not going to be best for most things), and bit rates.

What do you want to do with the file?

If you want a quick and dirty QT file for upload to the web or general proofing I always just use the MainConcept AVC/AAC codec and the 640x480 iPod option.

That should get you down to about 100mb for your ten minute video at pretty good quality.

Thanks guys. I realize that is a critical bit of info.

I'm still getting info from the client, but for now, let's assume it's not for DVD. (I would just want to use the standard Mpeg2 method to deliver that, correct?).

And if it's to upload to Vimeo, hands down, it'd be Eugenia's MP4, correct?

But to send editable footage - assuming a max of say 50 MB per minute, so it would be a file that could be sent via YouSendit, or put on a thumb drive or data DVD? That's the knowledge I seek. I want to understand how to create a standalone, edit friendly file, which approximates or achieves the quality of the source DV footage, and gives me the smallest possible file size. (Hope this isn't still too vague).

Or would it ultimately be best to just put it on a Mini DV tape?

(And William, I'm going to eye-test your iPod MainConcept QT against the 600 MB QT file I created. Will post back with results)
