Quicktime Problem

I exported a file from FCP through the quicktime conversion and I've done this a million times but now I did a lot of AE elements to the cut and when I exported it I can't seem to view it in my quicktime player - I exported it so the client can preview it from quicktime not from FCP. My quicktime quits every time I try to open the file. What seems to be the problem? is it because I have a slow video ram? (64mb) I'm only working on my old platform which is the PowerbookG4 12". Not really suited for heavy editing. I'm still saving money to buy my mac pro.

have you tried rendering before export. something you shouldn't have to do, but may be an issue (b/c computers are just like that sometimes)

Really? you don't have to render your clips before exporting? I've seen some bad exports if I don't render before exporting. But anyway, yeah, I did render before I exported.

still having issues? or have you figured out what is going on?

you shouldn't HAVE to render before export, FCP is suppose to handle it in the export process.

the problem that I've found is sometimes QT files that I've exported from FCP are listed as FCP files in their type. and while I can play it through QT on my computer, they don't work on other computers I try.

have you tried exporting through compressor? what I've heard is that compressor does exporting better than FCP. plus, you should be able to make a que of conversions of the file in compressor & hopefully one of the formats work.

Zijital,

It sounds like what you were looking to do was export via Quicktime Conversion, not Quicktime movie. That's if you are going directly from FCP to a QT file that everyone can watch. You would of course nee d to choose your codec, like the holy h.264.

I've found that exporting a Quicktime movie using the same settings as your source material, and then running that exported file through Compressor works best. And in most cases that two step process is actually faster then sending to Compressor from FCP. Not to mention that the two step process won't tie up FCP while you wait for compressor to .... compress. You can continue working.

AND, if you have a Mac Pro, I highly recommend utilizing virtual clusters to get the most horsepower out of compressor. You can find info on that within Compressor's user manual or on these forums.

Unfortuantely, I don't know After Effects. So I don't know how to address that part.

Where would we find more info on these golden nuggets called "virtual clusters"?
