QUICKTIME pro

hey guys i just got the latest quicktime pro, was looking forward to using the killer H.264 codec, but Vegas 5 always has an error rendering!!! any suggestions?

Vegas can't see the QT7 codec completely yet, as Apple hadn't released all the code at the time Vegas 6c came out. I'm sure it will be fully implemented at some future update. It's also not visible inside of most other Windoze apps as well.

Really? I havn't been able to either, and using version6.0c as well. I have just rendered out the file as an uncompressed or DV avi, depending on the situation and encoded in quicktime. What's your secret David. :)

I just pick the H.264 format in the drop-down. Works great and usually comes out a smidge lower in filesize than using QT Pro.

I have not tried since I built my new system, so maybe I can't anymore.

woo hoo, i kinda figured it out i think...just rendered an uncompressed quicktime from vegas, then used quicktime to export a smaller file...i think one of you said that. It's AMAZING!! took my small 53mb file and turned it into a higher res 11mb file!! best $30 ever!!

On this subject: I host alot of demo reels for actors and have been hesitant to use the superior H.264 because I've been afraid that people won't be able to play it. (there was an issue a while ago with the plug in not being available or something)
Do you all think it's safe yet to assume everyone is ready for it to play on their computers?

all you have to have is quicktime 7 installed. If they are still using 6 I think, but I'm not sure, something will let them know where to upgrade. Or you could just say, Quicktime 7 is needed to view this, and it is a free download here . . .

Some users are annoyed they have to download iTunes along with Quicktime. It's all or nothing with Apple. FWIW, a client the other day couldn't play an h.264 with QT6 (obviously) but they could hear the audio, which was most important because it was entirely interviews, thus audio-only met the need for a quick preview. As a major proponent for h.264, I don't think it's ready for the mainstream. For example, anyone with Windows98 cannot download or install the iTunes/Quicktime bundle! That's a substantial portion of computer users!

Thisiswells, Substancial proportion, windows 98? I really can't believe that. There may be a few left, but if your running windows 98, it also means that you are running a p3 at around 500mhz because there havn't been any computers released with windows 98 since, well 2000, almsot 6 years ago. So if your running windows 98, you most likely are not downloading video files off the internet, I could be wrong, there could be some schmuck somwhere getting mad because his computer can't handle 80% of the files he downloads. But to say QT7 is for the elite, well fine, then only the elite get to view my files, or if you have wmv installed as well :). My opinion, give them the option of having the highest quality presentation of your work. If they can't download that one, give them the second best wmv. IF they can't play either, they are running windows 98 and they are dumb and not worthy to view your masterpiece. :)

I'm not so sure WMV is second-best. I guess it depends on what your criteria are.

WM9, after all, is itself a variation of H.264.

Just a response to the Win98 comments:

Well.. I still have a machine with Win98 (simply because I can play my xBox off of it thru my monitor, something my WinXP system - which is more powerfull - can not do because there is a 1 second delay between the input video and output (so if I click a button, it takes the game on the screen like a full second to respond... major lag... this is using the ATI TV-Wonder) After taking my tv-tuner card out of the XP system and throwing it BACK into my Win98 system, there were no probs with it. Point being, there are some cases were Win98 is better.

Also... before upgrading to my P4, WinXP system, I was downloading tons of online video content on my Win98 system. With broadband connection, who cares what your system is? (As long as it isn't a 486 or something). Also one of my friends has a bunch of Win98 systems hooked up at their place they have tons of downloaded content.

The only problem with their Win98 systems though, is that I wanted to show them "Shed" and "Corporate Zombie" from your zombie fest and couldn't... 'cause they didn't have the proper quicktime codecs, and the proper ones would not install on their systems for some reason. They could see all the WMV entries without any probs.

Would I consider Q7 elite? Probably... why?
A) Because if I want to see 'FULL SCREEN' WMV video on my pc (or on my iBook), I can download WMV Player 9 for free.
B) If I want to watch Quicktime files at full screen, I need to spends 30bux (usd) to get the Quicktime Pro.
C) Everyone I know personally uses WMV and some even refuse to install/use QT on their machines.

Personally... I have not probs with QT (other than the fullscreen issue), and I visit Apples QT page often and watch Trailers from it all the time. But I agree with Sharky, give users 'both' options, and you can't go wrong.

Thanks for that direct dl link for the standalone player Jeditdv, until now I didn't know it existed.
