Quicktime Pro Registration

Question...since I have the full retail version of FCP Studio, should I not also have Quicktime Pro? Looks like I only have the Quicktime 7 Player.

I remember in older version of FCP, you'd just plug-in a registration number and then you'd have Quicktime Pro, but I just tore through my FCP Studio documentation and didn't come up with a registration number...any ideas!?

Thanks!

QT Pro should have automatically been activated with the install of FCP Studio. Check for the latest QT upgrades to see if that helps, otherwise, reinstall FCP.

The app is still called Quicktime Player in the menu bar. Select the Quicktime Player menu in the menu bar and there should be an option called Registration... which opens a dialog for you to enter your code. If FCS installed correctly the fields should be greyed out, say Automatic in the code field, and just below that say Quicktime 7 Pro in little letters. Hope that helps.

OK, I got that...well I guess I do have QT Pro. The reason I'm wondering is because it's not letting me export to H.264 in QT or Compressor...it's shaded like it's unavailable.

I'm on a 1.8 SP G5, OS 10.3.9.

Weird. If you didn't have QT Pro though you would not even be able to get to the "Export" option.

Try not using Compressor. Try making your clip into H.264 through QT Pro.

One thing that may be an issue is that every time QT changes versions you have to pay again. So for instance if you got FCP with QT6.x when you upgraded to QT 7.x you lost the pro part.
It's really stupid the way it works but there you go.

I don't have any h.264 options in QT's Export either. I'm so confused. I've got another G5 with OS 10.4 on it (at home) and I can export to h.264 no problem. Weird. So, I guess I DO have QT Pro, cuz it says so in the Registration window...

What QT can play and export to depends on the codecs installed on that system. So if the h.264 is not a codec that is part of the QT standard set then the other machine has had something installed on it that added the h.264 codec. If it's not proprietary (I have to confess my total ignorance of what h.264 is) then you should be able to download it off the Apple site. You might also try googling" h.264 quicktime codec" and see what shows up.

Preferences have a lot to do with settings missing. Try deleting your QuickTime preferences as well as your FCP ones.

Thanks for the tip TB - didn't do anything for my QT prob, but FCP is opening faster after the QT pref clean-up. FCP's been acting weird lately anyway (my capture window is 'Always on top' for some reason), so it might be healthy to start from scratch.

No prob. Yeah, you can do no wrong by reinstalling. Sometimes when a problem gets real out of control for me, I back everything up, completely reformat the drive, and reinstall everything. I've been yelled at by others for doing a complete reinstall when you can just reinstall the OS X system. However, I find that after doing a reformat of the drive that everything works so much faster, it's like having a new coomputer. I used to have start up issues, and now they are gone. It's good to do this once a year or so, even though it takes a day of time.
