on my personal machine at home i can export from quicktime to mpeg 2 using quicktime pro. at work i have the same setup, but no option for mpeg 2 encoding. i know that fcp 4 had this encoder with it, which is where i got it from, but i can't find anywhere on the internet to acquire it(purchase, download, anything). has apple done away with this encoder in order to get people to use compressor?

In version 4.5 I believe it was changed from the QuickTime Conversion menu into Compressor. There was a way to trick the system into getting it back in the QT menu, but not anymore. You have to go out to Compressor for MPEG-2 compression. It's actually a better MPEG-2 compressor now. Or you could use Bit Vice Pro.

A couple related questions:

It seems as though I don't get the option for MPEG-2 when i export through quicktime compressor. There is only MPEG-4. is this normal? What's the difference? And most importantly, for makig a simple DVD in DVDStudioPro that will just be played on TVs, which is better, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4?

DVD videos are authored using mpeg2. An mpeg 4 won't play on your average table top dvd player, as far as I know. If whatever software you are using is smart enough, it will likely just convert the mpeg 4 to an mpeg 2 if you attempt to make a dvd video with it. I could be wrong...
