Quicktime .MOV won't work on Windows

anyone know why an exported .MOV out of FCP on a mac at my school won't play on my windows computer at home? The file will open on my windows machine withthe latest version of Quicktime, but the screen is just white and Quicktime doesn't respond and forces me to kill the application. Is this a common problem, any reason why this would be happening?

Any help would be much appreciated.

cheers

A couple things need to be found out first.

Will it play on the mac? If not then you might need to export again.

And are you 100% sure you have the latest quicktime?

Its probably 1 of 3 things:
1) Something is wrong with the file.
2) You dont have the latest QT
3) QT is corrupted on your PC and needs a clean install

Thats all I can suggest.

it plays fine on the mac at school and I've got the latest version of quicktime at home, downloaded the lastest update a few weeks ago! I think it could have something to do with the codec? I exported using HDV codec from final cut, but windows doesn't seem to like it for some reason.

The problem usually happens when the codec you exported on the Mac is nonexistent on the PC, this happens with the DVCPRO-HD Qt codec as well if the PC doesn't have AVID installed.

I hope this helps.

hmm that sounds like it could be the problem, I don't think i've got a HDV codec on my windows computer, because its only running Premiere Pro, which doesn't support HDV. Is there anyway I could just download a HDV codec for Quicktime for windows, so HDV files can be played?

Nope.

FCP locks you into the Mac/FCP combo, where the high end codecs are only supported on the mac.

Re-export it from FCP into a format that is cross platform.
