Quicktime Export from matted footage

I am editing a 720x480 DV project in final cut pro HD. This project is destined for the web, primarilly. I am matting the clips to 1.78:1 (16x9) to create the widescreen look and to do some small vertical virtual camera moves. I want to export the 16x9 version to the web without black bars.

The FCP user manual says to create a 16x9 sequence (720x405) and place the edit into it for export. When I do, and scale the main sequence back to 100%, I still end up with thin black lines on the top and bottom from the matte! Am I messing something up? What should my sequence settings be to get them to match the 16x9 matte? and why the hell doesn't the 16x9 matte actually matte to 16x9?

Thanks for the help, it's much appreciated.

Re: Quicktime Export from matted footage

I just sort of answered the same question for another guy.

Easiest solution is the get the program Cleaner or Sorenson Squeeze.

With those you just put a self contained Quicktime into the program then adjust the settings for your web export. You can crop the matte out then have the compression set to be the size of your cropped image. all my short films are matted, but online they are all 16x9 or 2;35-1, cuz I used Cleaner.

You should be able to find Cleaner on either limewire or kazaa.

Re: Quicktime Export from matted footage

If you're exporting to the web, what program are you using for the compression? If you have FCP HD, then you should also have a program with it called Compressor. In compressor you can manually crop out the matte in the preview window (much like you can in cleaner).

My suggestion:
output an uncompressed self contained quicktime file from FCP. Then open that self contained file in compressor and manually cut out the black matte and compress your web movie simultaneously. I just did that myself because I had some problems using cleaner on my rather large 35 gig final export from FCP. Compressor did the trick though. Dropped that 35 gig 23 minute flik down to 135mb 480x213 anamorphic movie without the bars. Will be posting it soon. Teaser is up on my site for it now though if you're interested. I compressed and cut ou the black bars in cleaner there.

great suggestions! Thanks a ton for the help, I really appreciate it. I'm going to try the compressor option first, fi that doesnt work I'll buy cleaner.

Thanks again
