QuickTime doubling gigs?

Hoping someone has some ideas on this. We have been using the DN-300 recorders to record footage which records in only 2GB sized files. What I used to do is string the clips together in QT and save as a reference movie file for the sake of making the FLV and MP4 that I ultimately needed. Now I have started to string the clips together in QT and save as a self contained movie. What I noticed is that when I do that the media size doubles. Like if all of the 2GB files combined totaled 8GB then the self contained QT movie file would end up being 16GB. Does anyone know why this is the case? Any information would be appreciated. I am stumped.

Thanks in advance,
Angela

Well, after I string the files together in QT I am doing a "save as" and then checking the "save as a self contained movie" box. If I were exporting at that point I would then have those options, right? But I thought a "save as" is saving it as is only as one movie file instead of the 2GB pieces it started in from the DN-300. It even says when you check the "save as a self contained movie" what the final file size will be. I didn't catch that it was doubling the file size though until now.

You must be using Quicktime Player X. Who knows what that application does. I would suggest switching back to Quicktime Player 7.x, which allows you to select specific export codecs, etc.

No. I am using QT Player 7.6.4. There are no encoding options to choose when doing a "save as" only when you export do you have options. So I am wondering why it exactly doubles the file size.
