Quicktime compression

Evertime I try to render my file in Vegas using the quicktime codec, the audio sounds terrible and the video looks bad. I am using the standard quicktime presets for sorenson 3 and also mp4. Does anybody have a suggestion?

I have the same issue when comparing it to Windows Media Player 9 compression. Could be just the way the quicktimes play on our pc's. Something I've been wanting to do, and would suggest to you as well, is view your quicktime rendered file on a friend's Mac. If it sounds good there (& looks better), then it doesn't matter ... just specify on the web which version is for which kind of computer.

So perhaps you're asking, "Then why do the movie teasers I see online in Quicktime look & sound perfect?" Great question, and I have no idea. Then again, perhaps they don't sound as good compared to the originan source, but we don't have it to compare to, like we do our edited project. Just a theory at least.

Anyone else have any better responses? If so, it's a question I've had too.

I think the only way to get better results is to purchase the sorenson codec, it's a very basic codec in Vegas.

What's the problem you're seeing? I have no problems encoding QT from Vegas. Quality is fine (but filesize is large).

When i use the sorenson 3 codec, the video is pixelated and transitions are not smooth The video quality is set on high. When i use the default preset it looks fine but on large projects, i get an error message saying i don't have access to this file or not enough free space. i have at least 80gigs of space for this one little 6 minute video. when i render a small clip with default dv preset, it works but playback is very choppy, and the frames are very interlaced.

Well, you're describing several of the things I hate about Quicktime in general.

Default settings put keyframes every 24 frames. That's way too long of a GOP. Try "natural only" and see if it helps. Or, you could change it to 3 or 1, but you'll have a huge file size.

What's this for? Why Quicktime?

This seemed to help with the interlacing. came from the vegas customer support site:

The Real Player, Windows Media Player, and the QuickTime player can all take advantage of hardware acceleration. However, some graphics cards have problems using this mode, and duplicate column-pairs of pixels, which can make your video look jagged.
What it should look like:

What it looks like with a problematic card:

How to fix it:

QuickTime Player:
In the Quicktime Player, from the Edit menu, choose Preferences, then anything but General. In the dialog that appears, choose Video Settings from the combo-box. Select "Safe Mode (GDI Only)" and close the dialog. Exit the player.

Windows Media Player:
In Windows Media Player, from the View menu, choose Options. On the Playback tab, change the hardware acceleration setting to None. Press OK, and exit the player.

RealPlayer:
From the View menu, choose Preferences. Go to the Performance tab, un-check the "Use optimized video display" checkbox near the bottom. Press OK, and exit the player.

NOTE: Video Card makers often post driver updates. Please use the newest, NON-BETA drivers your card manufacturer has posted on their Web site.

Sounds like a video card issue.

The end user of this video is a church and they are using mac and quicktime to run all videos on the big screen.

So if the end user is utilizing Mac & Quicktime, how does it look on their end? Also, when I deliver projects for the church I've done work for, it's always on DVD to have the best sound, render, etc. Can they play it from a DVD instead? Won't be an issue then.

As far as the whole video card issue, I don't buy it. I've got a smoken video card now, and on this one, as well as a previous one, my Quicktime renders have always looked shoddy when compared to Windows Media Player.

I like HunterG's response about buying the Sorenson Codec ... I may check into that. Also Jubal28's suggestion may improve things as well, though I don't think it will help with the sound.

Since Sorenson Codec is for video, does anyone have any answer to why the sound sucks so bad, as was originally mentioned at the beginning of this thread?

Well, I gave up and just made a dvd of the project. I did not have time to fool with it anymore. I tried just about every setting I could think of, and still the quicktime sucked. Well I might have to give sorenson a try. looks pretty expensive though.

Thanks for all your comments they were helpful!
