Okay, so I guess I'm being a little over dramatic, but I just did a test with footage and noticed that quicktime alters images, when it supposedly shouldnt. Am I doing something wrong? You can do this test yourself and check it out.
Basically, I'm cutting with FCP and I import/digitize my footage as usual, whether it be DV, DVCPro HD, or whatever with the corresponding codec settings in FCP. By doing this, this creates a DV or DVCPro HD compression (which should be 1:1 to tape) in a quicktime file structure.
From there I'm fine, cutting quicktime files within FCP. The problem is, when I export untreated footage from FCP into a quicktime file, then compare the exported to the original digitize, there is a definite difference in quality of sharpness and color.
You can do this test too! Digitize something in it's native codec. Drop it on a native sequence and dont do anything to it. Export that sequence using the same settings. Import that newly created file, gang the 2 files and switch between the two. You wont see anything on some frames, but on others, you'll see a difference in color and sharpness. It's very slight, but when blowing up to 35mm, these small difference will become a huge difference.
Am I doing something wrong? I think I tried everything. Anyone else experience this and know of a work around? This is really unsettling because this seems to be something that no one talks about or hasnt discovered yet. Theoretically, nothing should be changed because I havent done any compressing or recompressing from the original footage.
