Quicktime codecs

[dr_stupid]

Really dumb question -- I haven't rendered out to quicktime very much -- I typically go to mpg for DVD and wmv for web stuff. Vegas gives me a million codec choices when going to quicktime -- so it seems that quicktime is just a file structure definition or "wrapper" of sorts, kind of like .avi? Is that correct?

What codecs are most popular to use or offer the best quality/compression in going to quicktime?

Yes, QT is a wrapper that covers quie a few codecs.

Codec selection depends on what you want- best quality, best web playback, best speed of playback off CD, etc.
DV codec of course will capture your DV footage.
Sorenson is used a lot for web projects.
Animation codec is used if you want the best quality (and may need alpha channel) and will need to go back and forth between several programs.
