Quicktime Codec

Okay, so I'm a film director and I shot a film. The Cinematographer (Guy that operates the camera) gives me the files back in QuickTime files. I HAVE QuickTime (Comes with iTunes which I downloaded because I have an iPhone). But for SOME REASON every time I try to play THESE certain files, this message shows up:

"Additional software is required for Quicktime to playback this media. It may be available from the QuickTime Components page.
Make sure your internet connection is active, then click the Continue button to check for the software"

I hit continue and it takes me here:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=Windows&ctype=696d6463&csubtype=68647636

None of that stuff works. What to do now?
I'm on a Compaq laptop, PC, Windows Vista.

What exactly is the extension? What does the icon look like? Sometimes when there's no extension it's becuase they've edited it on final cut pro and you need to add the extension .mov afterwards to open it. I've had that issue. But maybe someone else knows more.

Or the file could just be corrupt.

But what exactly are you trying to do? Why did your dp give it to you? To edit?

P.S. We're a film making board, we know what a cinematographer is. ;)

There's your problem right there. You have your DP making your dailies.

Just kidding. :)

But in order to try and help you, you'd probably have to give us a few more details. Answering Jon's questions would be a good start. Also, updating QT to the latest version might help. Also posting this in the Apple Workflow section might get the attention of one of the workflow wizards - but only if you provide more details.

BTW, cinematographers are not always operators.

There are several Quicktime codecs that only come with Final Cut Pro Studio (Pro Res, HDV, etc). Just find out which quicktime codec the footage is in. I believe even if you don't have the codec, when you open the file in quicktime, if you select Show Inspector in the menu you can see which codec it is.

Sorry, I also posted this on Yahoo Answers. lol (About the DP Explanation)
The icon looks like a regular .mov file and the extension is .mov. And no, the files aren't corrupted. It's a long complicated story to explain how I know that they aren't, please skim if this isn't necc for you:

We had TWO DP's. Our first DP filmed on an HVX and gave us the P2 Files AND the QuickTime conversion of them (I forget the name of the extension, had an 'M' in the extension I think). Anywho, all I had to do was drag these files into Adobe Premiere CS4 and it read them and I was able to edit. But this second guy filmed us on a HDMiniDV (Sony I think). He gave us our footage that he captured in Final Cut on his Mac along with the tapes that he recorded the film on, that, for some reason, won't play in my HVX or my DVX so I can't capture them myself. I also know that the files aren't corrupted because I have a program called 'Aiseesoft HD Video Converter' but only the trail version. It's the ONLY program that will play these files but the trial version won't let me convert any into a file that my comp understands and I'm not going to buy it. I only downloaded it because I thought it was free.

Probably your easist route is going to be to find someone with a comparable HDV camera and capture the tapes yourself.

Apple doesn't make all their codecs cross-platform. I don't know that you will be able to find it. Maybe you can, maybe you can't. If you're dealing with people who use the Mac, you will run into this problem. For example, if you tried the P2-converted .mov files he gave you, you'll find out those don't work, but the MXF files do. Apple's proprietary with their quicktime format, they make some things possible on the Mac platform that they don't extend to the Windows platform.

But maybe someone will come on and be able to solve it with some sort of codec download.

Well, as crazy as it sounds, I trust you because your name is yellow, lol, so I guess I'll just start looking for ways to either convert theses files or capture this HDminiDV. But I'd STILL appreciate any solutions if anyone has one. Thanx alot, guys!

Okay for the P2 Files (Panasonic HVX) (or MOV files) on PC you can most likely use this:
http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QDVCProHD.asp

The HDV (Tapes) could have been captured into AIC, HDV or ProRes422
If they are in ProRes You are lucky and can use:

The Apple's Windows ProRes 422 Decoder.

http://support.apple.com/downloads/Apple_ProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_for_Windows

If you're not lucky its HDV or AIC.
Then you'll need FFMPEG (Free) and some front end software to extract the material via FFMPEG from HDV .MOV files.

@Batutta: Sorry I just duplicated your post about QDVCproHD :).

Also I'm assuming that "WE_ARE_SPAMMERS" is triggered by the name of some company, that promotes their products by spamming.

That Calibrated Software sounds like it's exactly what I needed. Let me see hoe much it costs, lol.

As for the 'WE ARE SPAMMERS', I pasted that from something I copied. I Corrected myself immediately afterwards, that's not the name of the program.

This is what GSpot tells me about the files. What does it mean?:
