Quick Rundown on HDV With or Without Intermediate Codec?

I may be getting a JVC HD100 very soon and am curious as to the difference between the Easy Setups:

HDV 720/30P
HDV 720 - Apple Intermediate Codec - 30P

Can someone give me a quick rundown on this?

Basically HDV is captured in an "intermediate" codec that FCP can handle much more easily in terms of processing power that native HDV editing. When you're done with your edit, FCP then can re-encode back to HDV upon export to your deck or camera.

The jury is still out on several codecs to use and the trade-offs in terms of quality vs. storage space vs. data rate, such as whether to convert to AIC (apple Intermediate), DVCPRO HD, JPEG 2000, Photo JPEG, etc. I think most people stay away from native HDV editing with FCP and use one of the above codecs.
