Quick questions

1. Sometimes I end up with empty space at the end of a timeline. Some other NLE's I've used had a slider control at the top RH corner to drag to the left until reaching the end of the project. How is this done in FCP?

2. Several times during a project the video in the viewer window has screwed
up and started flashing two of the frames from the timeline back and forth
and not displaying the video. Is this a known bug or is it just me? Closing
FCP and reopening fixes it every time with no loss of footage. I have version
5.12 on an Intel Imac.

Thanks in advance for any help.

1) If I understand your question: there's a slider at the bottom of the timeline that you can drag left and right to move through your sequence.

2) I don't think I've ever encountered this problem, sorry.

No, the problem is actually empty space at the end of the timeline that I need to get rid of. Last project over 3 minutes of empty space!

Not sure exactly how that happened but, scrub through your timeline so your marker is on the very last frame in your clip. Then choose from the menus MARK/ mark out. This will tell FCP where the clip ends. You can simply scrub to the end and hit the o key for the same thing.

Ill let someone else talk about your other question as I have never seen it.

The frame flashing occasionally happens to me as well. I dont know what it is, but I just restart FCP and it works fine again. Its weird though.

1. If you have "empty space" at the end of a project that FCP is treating as part of the project, you have media floating out there. FCP automatically cuts a project's end on the last frame of the last clip in the Sequence. There is not physical blank space at the end of any project. If you experince this, I'd suggest zooming into the Timeline window much more and looking for some lost, tiny clip floating around out there. I've never seen FCP EVER add "blank space" to the end of a project.

You could also place your playhead at the end of what you think is the last clip, then scroll to end of said "blank space", hold the shift key while clicking there, it'll select anything that may be inbetween those two spots. Then hit the delete key.

But FCP does NOT add blank space to the end of projects. If you want that, you actually have to add a slug. Zoom into your Timeline window closer. I suspect there is a tiny clip there, where FCP claims the end of the project is, and you're just zoomed out too far to see it.

2. Problem with your installation. This is not a known bug, never was. I assume you mean it flashes between two clips when you're not physically touching anything, not the mouse, not the keyboard, not anything, correct? Download FCP Rescue 5 and trash your prefs. Also, use Software Update to upgrade to FCP 5.1.4.
