sorry for such a rookieish question, but i cant seem to figure it out.
FCP 4.5 HD how do i set up my audio so i can see the waveform on my timeline?

it's under one of the sequence settings... I don't exactly know where under there because I'm not at work.
 
In the User Preferences under Timeline Options, in the Track Display area there is a checkbox for "Show Audio Waveforms." Check it and you'll get your waveforms in the timeline.
