Quick question on recording audio during an interview

I am trying to better educate myself on how best to record audio in various situations and was wondering if you guys can help me out with a quick question regarding interviews. During a sit down interview is it customary to record using shotgun mic and a lav mic at the same time? I have been doing this on my last few jobs where an audio guy was not present. I haven't gotten any complaints from my clients but was curious if this was a solid technique?

I run a senheiser shotgun mic direct into channel 1 of my C100 and a Lectrosonic lav mic into channel 2. I balance the audio so that both levels are equal, monitor with headphones, and hit record.

Thanks again!

Certainly it is preferable to have two (mostly) independent channels to record the audio track so that you have maximum redundancy in case of failure.
The bottom line is what do you DO with those two tracks during post-production editing?

Depending on many different factors, your lav or your shotgun channel may be the better for whatever you are recording. So you would use that better channel exclusively in the final mix.

Nothing wrong with giving the options although it is best to have the shotgun near to the speaker and not just as a camera mic.

Also make sure you mark the material with what is on each channel as I have seen editors who would sum both together or even worse just leave them panned hard left and right.
