Quick question on open-face vs Fresnel lights.

So I have finally started messing with my lights, having built a decent kit within the last two months or so. My kit as it stands at the moment consists of only tungsten units, most of them old theatrical lights. Recently while playing with them I realized my 650 open-face was outputting more than my much larger (physically) 1k fresnel unit. Both have brand new globes. Is this normal? In fact I'm almost disappointed at the output of the 1k fresnel which doesn't seem to have any effect if not close to the subject. I'm guessing they are not ideal for lighting large spaces?

Also, totally unrelated to the above, I see people gelling background lights blue and sometimes green. What gels exactly do they use? I ordered THIS Filter pack recently to experiment with gelling and diffusion and it has several levels of CTB sheets. Are these what people use to gel for aesthetics? I ask because they did not seem to provide too much blue when I tried. In fact the effect was almost not visible at all. My guess was that these are meant purely for color temperature correction and that there are special ones for the blue effect I'm looking for?

Thanks for any insight.

Yep, that's about par for the course - the fresnel lens takes out a substantial amount of a light's output (the upside is added control).

Open face lights are much more efficient than Fresnels. The latter sacrifice output for more control of the beam and a wider focusing range.

As for gels for background lights, any number of things can be used, it totally depends on the situation. Steel blue and steel green are nice, they're fairly popular non-correction gels. Get yourself a swatchbook from LEE and Rosco and see what colors you like.

First, check the wattage (voltage too, if you're in the US you want 120v not 220v).

A Lowel Tota light can take lamps that range from 300w to 750w. (Though I've seen older materials that list a 1k bulb that work in a Tota too.) But just the wattage doesn't fully determine the output.

According to Lowel, the 650W FCM bulb is brighter than the 750W EMD.

Even more so, a 1k HMI will put out about 3x more light than a 1k halogen.
