What would you say the minimum requirements would be to run FCP4?
on the other hand...in OUR DREAM WORLD...
What would you like to have?...your dream set up??
I'm asking because I want to get...some where in between!
Thanks for the help.
We have a copy running on a G3 / 400 iMac, although it is far from an ideal situation in any sense of the word.
I personally own a G5 / dual 2ghz / 4gb RAM / 146 gb internal drives (2x73 10000rpm replacing the stock 160gb) with a 1tb FW800 array. It is about the best NLE I have ever owned or used, bar none, and I often go home to do free-lance work rather than rent an AVID.
I think any modern G5 with 1gb of RAM and 250+gb of HD space is a good centerpeice. I have even seen people editing some very serious stuff on a G4 Laptop.
The dream world is G5 dp 2.5 with 8gb of RAM and 146gb internal space attached to a 3.5tb hard drive array, backed up by one of the SDI boards that does on the fly HD rendering. Since the FCP suite of applications can attach to a render farm for special effects, I would link this to a farm of six additional machines by fiber, and have them all render off times for next day review, and during the day the six machines can be used to do piece work on your project or be used by your assistant editors as capture and review tools.
Remember, "Cold Mountian" was edited in toto on four rather anemic G4 Power Macintosh computers using FCP. Alone, each machine was nice, but together they were a render farm.

This will floor you: less than my first Media Composer, and only half the same thing from AVID. If I was doing serious HD >>> Film work, I would simply get everyone in the office G5 computers instead of Dells, and at night they would be my render farm.

I am in education now, and only free-lance outside. But at my last professional gig (United States Department of Justice) everyone from secretary to production assistant got a G4 dual processor, and we used them even before ganging was common for all sorts of things. They were not that much more expensive than a Dell office computer, and I would sometimes have five projects rendering in the evening on everyone in the production groups computer, then I would come in early and grab the rendererd files back by the gigabit backbone.
However, should I ever go back to the business full-time, I will keep you in mind. And if you go back to college at my school, I will give you 24/7 access to a G5 shared by only eight other students, and weekly access to your own steadycam, jib, DVX100, and a whole load of other goodies, plus having the best professor of production in the business to yell "crap" at you when you show him your stuff.
