Quick question-Are All tripod threads universal?

Came up with a stupid question today:

Are all tripod baseplates (other than massive film stuff) using the same thread size? I think on most stuff its like 1/4-20. I guess the real question is whether its the same even for the big ENG type ones.

There are 2 sizes - 1/4" for all consumer/pro sumer video camcorders & still cameras and 3/8" for larger shoulder mount broadcast video cameras.
Threaded adapter insert allows downconverting 3/8 to 1/4
