Quick editing technique?

I'm a fan of films like Saw that use quick cuts and flashes in the editing. lots of music videos do this also.

I'm just wondering if there's any decent info via the net or books on this style?

When i try and do it, it doesn't look right.

Is it just trial and error?

Hi Derkoi,
I love this style too. This is how I studied it. Watch the SAW 1 & 2 sequences
on your DVD players frame by frame, manually advancing each one
by hand. Hit the pause button on the control, then advance frame by frame.

You'll see its a combination of different angles, different lighting,
close ups and full shots, repeating of certain frames, mixed in noise and hard pans, shots of other places in the room other that where the protagonist is,
like their POV, repeated frames with filters added to them, flashes
of white etc. all done in an offtime fashion.

The sound is also adding a BIG time support to this.

Try my frame-by-frame idea and start trying to emulate it,
then you'll come to your own style that has the right feel to it
in your projects!

Best!

Thanks for the reply, I thought of doing that with the pause, so i'll give that a shot.

Any suggestions on a good set of sound effects that would be good for sequences like that, they're whooshes, crackles and stuff.
