Just use Windows MovieMaker to convert the files from AVI to WMV. MovieMaker will let you do the AVIs one at a time, or you can use the "Make Movie" function to merge AVIs together with a default fade between clips. Original sound is included of course.
In my case I also set MovieMaker to up-res my 720 AVI files to 1080, which it did, but this is not a true upres since it simply centers and encodes the 720 video into a 1080 frame size.
I did this on a Win7-64 system with no problems. There are other solutions that require installing 3rd party codecs etc. but not all of these work with a 64-bit OS.
I had thought MovieMaker was part of Win7 but in fact it has to be downladed; it is part of Windows Live which includes a whole boatload of stuff so if you opt for this be sure to check only the MovieMaker option. Even so it still installs something called Windows Live Photo Gallery (FastStone is much better in my opinion) but the DL/install runs fine and MovieMaker can be found in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\PhotoGallery folder.
