quick deinterlacing question

Hey. I was reading an article on here about how deinterlacing is better on some other programs than it is on vegas (there were 4 examples). I am wondering... when I slow 60i footage down to 40 percent in a 24p timeline... this recombines frames as I understand it. So... here is where I am confused... Should I use something besides vegas to do this? hmm...
Thanks-

They are talking about converting to 24P/30P without slowing down the footage, then there are probably better solutions.

But if you want 60i - 60P - 24P vegas would work fine. Not sure if you can do it in one step. Im only do 50i - 25P conversions.

yup, you just place your 60i footage on a 24p time-line. Right-click the clip and select properties, then set the playback speed for .40 and there you go. In the project properties box you can select either blend-fields or Interpolate fields for the deinterlacing mode. I would recommend Mike Crash's deinterlacer (Google) however, as it does a better job then Vegas' own.

The article was about converting 60i to 24p with no speed change, and compared Vegas to stand-alone conversion tools such as DVFilm Maker and Magic Bullet, which are expensive pieces of conversion software, so they're likely to do a better job than a general NLE.

But that's different from your purposes -- you're taking 60i, slowing it to 40%, and then converting to 24p. What this does is make every 60i field match up 1-for-1 with each 24p frame, so the motion is perfectly smooth.

Now, it does have to interpolate the fields, because they're half-pictures and not whole pictures, as progressive frames are, so the fields need to be "filled in" to make full frames. And there's only half the information to work with, so there's a vertical resolution hit.

You can't really avoid the resolution loss. Vegas does fine for this purpose. And at DV resolution, which is low to begin with, often, you won't notice much difference.

hmm I guess what I am wondering is... although I may see an improvement when deinterlacing on programs other than vegas... I am referring to the specific process of slowing 60i footage down to 40% in a 24p timeline. Will I see any loss in quality doing this on vegas vs some other software? Thanks for the responses-
