Quick Composition question

Greets guys, I am throwing together a school project on FCP and have a small composition question. You can speak technically as I have experience with FCP just none in compositing.

My question: How may I superimpose images on top of one another? I think this is referred to as layering. Basically I am trying to create the first image which is playing with the other also playing, but in the background, to give the scene a more meaningful value. Can I string several layers like this and how is this done?

Sorry for the newb questions, and thanks in advance.

It's the composite modes. Apple Pro Training Series, Advanced Color Correction and Effects in Final Cut Pro 5, this books covers and explains the Composite Modes really well.

Right click on a clip and go to Composite Mode, you have a bunch to chose from. Depending on color, luma, and alpha in the clip, they'll so some really neat stuff.

Another way is to make one smaller on the top layer.

What exactly are you trying to do?

I STRONGLY advise you get the above mentioned book ASAP if you want to learn this stuff for real. It's quick to learn and easy to do.

Compositing is actually one of FCP's greatest strengths. I see folks all the time taking footage out to After Effects and Motion and stuff a LOT to do compositing that can be easily done inside FCP. FCP won't do what AE and Motion do, but it has some of the most powerful and flexible compositing tools of any NLE around. It's really worth learning.

Can you give us an example of the sort of effect you're looking for, specifically?
