Questions Regarding Possible new DVX ...

After reading Barry and Jarred's outstanding analysis, I am left to ponder the downside of redistributing the geometry of a 1/3" CCD to provide "Native" 16:9 ...

While at a first glance this approach seems to provide some great 16:9 images, it also seems to introduce new problems:
Reduced Low Light capacity, Reduced 4:3 resolution, Additional artifacting, etc ...

If Panasonic follows the lead of Canon, and Sony, won't they also end up with a product that possesses similiar limitations?

This is one reason why I have been hoping for a 1/2" version ... At least then Panny would have more CCD Real Estate to work with and thus would in my mind at least totally smoke everyone else ...

Can someone help me better understand this issue ... ???

Thanks !! ; ;D

Re: Questions Regarding Possible new DVX ...

No, you basically understand it already.

Smaller pixels = lower low-light capability. Using a 16:9-shaped CCD will lead to lower 4:3-mode resolution. Artifacting and aliasing are possibilities that may occur when using a "square peg" to render a "round hole" image.

If Panasonic follows Canon and Sony and introduces a 16:9-shaped CCD, then yes you can expect that the 4:3 performance will not be as good as it would have been had they made the CCD 4:3. Now, it's possible that with a couple years' development time, maybe technology has advanced to where its 4:3 image would still be better than the DVX's, who knows... but it wouldn't be as good as if the chip itself was 4:3. However, I thoroughly expect that any new CCD design from them will be 16:9, because that's what people are clamoring for...

And yes, a 1/2" CCD would provide tremendous opportunity for improvement. But also require bigger lenses, etc. I don't think it'll happen at the $5,000 price point that we're expecting, but we can hope!

Thanks for the reply Barry.

I would be willing to pay the current DVC200 price range $5,000-10,000... I know this is not Panny's primary price point but I think they should seriously pursue such a move ...

Thanks Again ...
