Questions on DIY 35mm adapter

I was reading on how to make your own and it says you have to use the dummy CD for the ground glass, I dont plan to be using an adapter for serious use, jsut for learning, do I really need to make the ground glass, I dont care about grain.

if its anything like the jewel case, then yes it will work greatly. It will provide you with little to no light loss ( depending on lens ) and a very sharp image, however what you are sacrificing is the "beautiful" bokeh ( i put that in quotes because its completely subjective ) that film has. Those with higher grain lose more light but have a nicer bokeh ( of out focus look ) sometimes its hazzy, sometimes it looks like paint, sometimes it looks like your crossing your eyes slightly and its painful to look at. yadda yadda.

Yes, you do need some type of ground glass... The 35mm lens projects the image onto the matte surface of the ground glass (like a rear-projection screen), and the DVX is focused on that projected image. Grain is sometimes a side-effect of the ground glass, whether desired or not. That's the reason some adapters use a spinning ground glass - then, the "grain" is at least moving around (not sitting stationary in your picture), or even blurred out of sight.

thanks

thanks

Oh thank you, I never knew that is what the ground glass was for, I always thought it was just because it reduced grain.
