Questions for my potential Kit

Am I making the right decision to spend my money on lights instead of a 35mm adaptor?
Absolutely. Without lights, you have nothing.

The stuff you're looking at is quality stuff and will give you plenty of flexibility.

A painting is not much more than the very creative use of light and shadow to give 2D or 3D effects. Video is just a moving painting. To do your lighting right you need the best tools.

Opinions vary on egg crates. Barn doors are one way to control light. Eggcrates another. Diffusion panels are still a third method.

It will be fine to clip gels to those barndoors. Don't buy those silly Lowel gel frames, just clip them to the barndoors with clothespins like all the pros do.

You don't 'need' eggcrates on a softbox. Barndoors help control things a bit... sometimes making a 'skirt' with blackwrap to go around... like a snoot for the softbox. But eggcrates are great, and offer a level of control with softer/larger light sources that are really hard to achieve with the barndoors. Barndoors would have to be impractically big on a soft source to work well... hence the need for eggcrates.

Your kit sounds like a good idea though, I'll give it the thumbs up. Plus I'm sure those coollights guys will offer fitted eggcrates soon enough, right Miracom? ;)

You're right. We have samples from two companies on order right now. This is a good opportunity to ask a poll question though. Do people prefer these in black or silver? I see so many varied opinions about it. Personally I was thinking silver was the way to go.

Well... we're kinda hijacking this thread but: I like black *generally speaking*. Here's why:

If I want the flipping light to go everywhere, I'll take off the eggcrate. The whole point is controlling where its going. Although the silver might let more light through, it tends to be bouncing off to the sides, where you're trying to kill it, and not on the subject that you were trying to light.

One vote for matte black.

Of course, but there are famous models out there with silver. I agree black makes the most sense given what it is.

Yes I've used some of those 'famous models'. Just because someone else has already done it, and charged a ton for it, doesn't make it right. :P

I'm not saying that reflective eggcrates are totally worthless. I'm saying that if I have to choose one type to have on-hand, it will certainly be the black.
