Questions about pixel aspect for PAL DV footage

I've shot some footage on DVX100 (4:3) & began to edit it in FCP.

Should i be setting my sequence settings with square pixels or not?

I've noticed the footage looks like it has blocky step like edges to objects. I didn't notice this when using Vegas.

Any suggestions?

What version of FCP are you running? When you drop your first clip in a sequence, it should prompt you to match the sequence settings to the clip if they aren't the same. DV 4:3 is square pixels to the best of my knowledge.

Select the DV-PAL Easy Setup, create a new sequence and that sequence will have the proper settings. DV uses non-square pixels (as most video codecs do w/the exception being full raster HD codecs) and the step like edges are most likely interlacing artifacts. This artifacts are normal when you are viewing interlaced footage on a device not designed to playback interlaced footage (such as a computer monitor). I don't use Vegas, but many editing programs will only display a single field for viewing purposes because it looks more pleasing (no visible interlacing) and it reduces the load on the CPU.

Thanks guys.

It's not interlacing artefacts, it was shot in progressive & captured progressive.

It's more like a low resolution. Maybe im just noticing standard def more and more. i dunno.
