although i have no editing equipment, would it be a good idea to go ahead and buy the dvx? any advice would help. i would most likely get a powerbook to edit on in the future.

You can always find cheap/free editing software. Granted, it's limited, but if you're just getting started, you might not need an Avid suite just yet.

The thing is, even without editing software, you can test out different settings, and get to know the camera.

Hold on a sec...

Hold on a sec...

If you want to be a filmmaker, the first thing you have to do is make movies! Get youyrself a camera and go to town. Here's my suggestion though: If you think it will be a while before you get your computer, you may want to consider taking that $3500, and getting a G5 for around $2000 and a inexpensive mini dv camera, then while you're saving your money for a HDX200 or some other HD prosumer you can be learning how to master non linear editing and framing shots and directing actors without being restricted. I know you will just ignore me because you have your heart set on a new dvx100a, but you can make the films you want now, and make them better later. Something to think about, and read DV Extreme by Rick Schmidt to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about.

SOme guys swear by DV rack. It does a lot more than capture. FYI, DV Rack is PC-only.

I edit on Premiere 6.5 on a PC. Works fine for me.

Ditto John, Vegas Rocks! and VV6 will be here soon!!!! Bet it will timeline and source preview windows

I think he might mean a DV *deck*. It's a good idea, but it's not critical. Just saves wear and tear on your heads and drive mechanisms, and might be faster, especially if you batch capture, because a deck is built to be wound, played, rewound, FFed, etc..

Screw the PC/Mac debate -- it so happens that Vegas handles 24p better than any other NLE, and I mean that quite seriously. You'd do well to match your computer to your NLE, not the other way around.

dude, if you have a pc already, stop being a brat and buy a dvx and use your pc to edit. wuts the big deal? preimere/vegas/avid express/windows movie maker...take your pick, buy the dvx and start making some shizzle...

thanks rich. thats just what i needed. someone to just say get the damn camera and stop bsing! hehe. really. thanks.

do you mean a deck, as in a dedicated dv player? Not a camera but something like a component tape deck?
Or do you mean DV rack, which is a windows based software app that allows you to capture your footage as you shoot on your PC or laptop,(among other cool things) bypassing the heads?
