Question WRT Log and Transfer - keep it on one drive, or do it across two?

Hi all

I'm about to embark upon a pretty crazy job which will see me editing on the fly in Africa.

We'll be shooting with three Sony EX1s, and editing with FCP. I'll be responsible for dumping the data from the SXS cards, and converting them to workable media for FCP.

Here's what I intend to do.

1. Copy data from SXS card to 15" Macbook Pro's Macintosh HD.

2. Convert media with FCP's Log & Transfer tool from Macintosh HD to a 500Gb LaCie Rugged drive via FW800. This will be my Scratch Drive.

3. Backup converted media to another 500Gb LaCie Rugged drive. This will be my Backup Drive.

4. Edit from Scratch Drive, or if I have time, backup Scratch Drive to 1Tb Mobile RAID and edit from 1Tb RAID.

5. Do necessary exports, and back everything up media-managed FCP Project Files to 1Tb RAID.

***

My big concern is Steps 1 and 2 - what is most efficient and will cause the least strain on my hardware:

1. Copying to Mac HD and converting to Scratch Drive?

2. Copying to Mac HD, converting to Mac HD and then copying to Scratch Drive?

3. Copying to Scratch Drive and converting to Scratch Drive?

Maybe there's no real difference, but I just wanna make sure I work optimally and don't run the risk of damaging any of the hardware, as we'll be out in the wild and if stuff breaks, we're screwed.

Any and all advice will be deeply appreciated!

With thanks and regards,

Oh and one other question: I've been checking out XDCAM Transfer and XDCAM Clip Browser... Are any of these better to use? I'm most familiar with FCP's Log & Transfer tool, but XDCAM Transfer seemed lighting fast.

Thanks ;)
