Question to those inventing their own products

I'm curious to know something...

I'm in the very early stages of prototyping a toy-like product, and am concerned about IP theft ...

Are y'all doing patent searches, applying for patents and trademarks and such? How long is that whole process taking you? And how much did the patent search and request cost? I'll be going down this road fairly soon.

If you do patent one of your ideas, make sure you don't do it through one of those online,TV services ( they seal!! ). As long as you have a patent pending you're safe.
