Question regarding transcoding AVCHD footage

Hi! I have a few questions regarding transcoding footage, edit and exporting.

First off i shoot with Sony DSLR cameras and thus get AVCHD material. (PAL FPS)

My settings in camera are

25p and 1/50s
50p and 100/2

To be able to work with them smoothly in premiere i need to transcode them as my Imac is a bit long in the tooth (will get replaces this fall)

For 25p i found this pretty straight forward in prelude as i have a 1080 25p Apple pro res preset.

There is none for 50p though.. so to keep 50p i have to resort to the 720 50p Apple Pro res preset.

So my question is what happens to my 50p if i transcode it to 1080 25p Apple pro res ? (what are the downsides)

Should i just go that route as most of the time the export will be 25p anyway ? (am i right in assuming that 25p is more common then 50p output when exporting)

If anyone can give my some pointers, or point me in the direction where can read up on the subject matter it would be highly appreciated!

Thanx!

As a general principle, downscaling is the preferable option over upscaling. So convert the clips to matching specs, and edit in a 720 sequence.
