Question on shooting format

Hi,

Not sure quite where to post this.

Looking at shooting a feature film this summer. The intention is to try to get distribution and if not, go self-distribution route. I was originally gonna shoot on my DVX100a but have heard that film festivals and many distributors don't even consider anything that's not fillm or HD.

So i've been looking at the most cost effective way to go HD and tossing up the Canon XH A1, HVX200 and the EX1. For cost reasons, I would prefer to get the A1 which is HDV. My question is whether HDV is considered to be HD for the purposes of these festivals and distrbutors? Or is is considered glorified MiniDV?

Thanks.

There are few festivals which won't take a film on DVD, and that's SD.

No one cares what it's shot on if it's good. (Well, that's not 100% true, but true enough for this stage of the game.)

But to answer the question, HDV is HD.

Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that if I shot a feature film on miniDV (24p with my DVX100a) I would be laughed off as unserious. Your response has given me some hope that worst come to worst I can shoot on the DVX and that if I do go HDV, it's HD. Thanks again.

Your question regarding if HDV is considered high definition is a gray area. It is NOT standard definition but by many broadcast standards, is NOT HD.

It's like a teenager, not quite a child and not quite an adult.

I remember a thread somewhere on here which was a fierce debate because Discovery Channel had really strict policies on it's acceptance of 'HD' footage and Panasonic DVCPRO HD was even being debated. (If I remember correctly it was ruled to be just fine)

Edit: Here is that thread

Anyway, that doesn't even matter because I have not heard of many festivals which do not take standard definition material. Shoot with the best camera that is at your disposal and benefits the story/ visual look. Let the rest judge for themselves.
